Vandy Should offer Parker Cothren

  • Parker Cothren 6'5 260 DL/OL committed to Purdue. This kid is very strong, great motor, good student and athletic!

    I would love to see him play closer to home...I am his uncle.

    Kid is a beast and lives less than 2hrs from Vandy.

  • Congratulations on having an outstanding division 1 student-athlete nephew! I hope parker has enjoyed the recruiting process and is looking forward to a successful journey in college. He is one of several offensive linemen I thought / think may receive a Vanderbilt offer. Does he hear often from vu? The sec is won in the trenches, and it takes time for linemen to develop. I would love to see us take multiple o linemen this year, but it looks like CJF has been very cautious with his offers. Cannon, Damanhoury, tetlow, cothren... Are all recruits that may develop into quality sec offensive linemen. If a Vanderbilt offer comes parker's way, I hope he snaps it up and grabs the opportunity for a world class education and to compete in the sec. Best of luck to him and to you! (the recruiting process is stressful for families, jut as it is for the recruits themselves)

  • If Vandy offered I really think he would commit on the spot! Parker is really under rated and now that his senior highlights are out his stock is rising.

    He would love to play for Vandy...just waiting on the offer. Plus, Hazel Green has a lot of talent and could get a pipeline going to Vandy. Vandy is the closest D1 school in North Alabama!!! My son is a freshman QB and I would love for him to go to Vandy (who wouldn't) :-).

    Hopefully they will offer Parker and I can start buying some Vandy season tickets!!!

  • To say a quality student-athlete, who is committed to a major university, is waiting on a Vanderbilt offer just shows how far we've come since November 27, 2010. (The notorious Wake Forest game)

  • I agree...Great to see Vandy in this position. Just hope the coaching staff offers this kid!!!

    Just curious, does Parker see himself as more likely to play on the offensive or defensive side of the ball? (does he have a preference?). Has a great frame to play on either, but was wondering if some programs are recruiting him specifically for one or the other.

  • To Barton: to educate fans on video analysis, what do you see from a video like this? It's hard to judge only highlights when anyone should look good in an edited highlight clip... But there certainly are a lot of explosive plays to show. Young man has size. Is there just that much weight placed on the summer camps and 7-on-7 games? (when presumably the best competition is going head to head)

    If JG can tolerate hearing some expert criticism / commentary, what does a recruiting expert like you Barton that sees tons of film see in this clip? Thanks in advance for the insight!

  • Here's my two cents, for what it's worth:

    1. He has very good quickness and speed for a young man of his size; gets to QB on deep drop, makes tackles way down the
    line, around end;

    2. He has very good instincts/nose for the ball; gets to the ball on all kinds of plays, many away from him;

    3. Has a good motor/heart; doesn't stop trying to get to where the ball carrier is;

    4 Very good technique, in at least these areas:

    - Squares up with blocker with good balance/position, then explodes toward ball;
    - When approaching the QB trying to pass, gets his hands up high if he can't get to the QB in time;
    - When blocking on offense, maintains his block and drives his opponent, sometimes pancakes him;
    - Uses proper "hands inside opponent's arms" when blocking;
    - When taking on blocker coming at angle on end sweep, uses proper crouched shoulder bump to maintain outside
    leverage.

    5. Some of these positives will hold true regardless of strength of opposition; some will depend on success against strong opposition, and I have no ready information on that.

  • Thanks for your replies.

    Just to note - Parker will be at Penn State this weekend. Really wish Vandy would have him come in for an official. Parker's senior film is just now making the rounds with coaches. Penn State actually offered Parker after watching the film. He loves DL and could play DT or DE! Auburn told him they would put him in the NFL as an OL (an offer from Auburn is more than likely coming).

    Moto - you two cents are accurate. Parker can play many positions and add depth on either side of the ball.

    If Vandy would offer I am sure they would not be disappointed - this is not a high risk offer. Rivals is about to update his star rating due to the film just released.

    Come Vandy - Anchor Down on Parker! :-)
