Dores make cut for Top247 safety

One of the top safeties in the nation has been working hard to trim down his extensive offer list. Leon McQuay III has given 247Sports his top ten.

  • Is this still a UF vs. VU battle?

I think UF and Vandy are still in great shape but McQuay's recruitment is starting to devolve into a little bit more of a mystery. It's starting to get a little bit tougher of a feel on him.

He definitely wants to enroll early wherever he goes and that's why Stanford got ruled out. Academics are going to play a big role in this so that's why you have to love Vandy's chances.

  • I like our chances with McQuay, especially given the fact that he and Grady are seemingly very good friends (tweeting each other on a daily basis) and his tweets to coach Gattis, VU's offensive recruiting coordinator. That said, McQuay is far from a shoe-in imo, but I'd like to think we're in his top 2 at the moment. Not to mention, Florida already has commitments from 2 top safeties.

Depending on how this class turns out, Joshua Grady could end up being the most important recruit in Vanderbilt history. (Ok maybe not history but huge nonetheless)

  • how will his fathers influence factor into his decision, if at all?

Not much. His father is very active in the process and will be by his side every step of the way but I think the decision is pretty much in Leon No. 3's hands. Just talked to someone who spent a couple of hours with Leon's dad over the weekend and he said he didn't even know where he was going.

I do think his dad is high on the academic side of things.

Leon had a brother, Khiry McQuay a few years ago that kind of went under-recruited and interestingly enough academic issues hurt him. So I think Leon is now just happy for his son to have plenty of options and plenty of opportunities unlike his other son.

Lots of DBs having "Adam Ditto for 6" nightmares right now...one or two anyway.

To be frank, you might be right. Grady has been a catalyst for the program both on and off the field. He possesses versatility with his speed, catching ability, explosiveness, and ability to deliver accurate passes. He'll be a fixture in the offense as a receiver and a wildcat QB. Off the field, I've yet to encounter a player with more energy about the program than Grady. Josh bleeds black and gold and it's clear that he wants to galvanize a program that is starving for success.

Should be a lot of fun to see what he does this year. Whether he's worked into some wildcat type QB packages or not, I expect him to make an impact as a pass-catcher in the fall.

  • Leon McQuay Jr (L3's father) tweeted that he thinks UF moved in another direction with regard to his son. Take it for what it's worth.
