Decision coming soon for Florida OL

Chris Griffin

Chris Griffin was named 2nd Team All-State in 2011 for the state of Florida.

Chris Griffin has trimmed his college list to seven schools. Four of them will get a visit next week and a decision is coming shortly thereafter.

    • I hope we can land Griffin. You can never have enough quality Offensive Lineman.

I saw him in the state playoffs last year. Really sleek, athletic kid who plays in a total grind-it-out, blue-collar offense. Kid has good athleticism, plays with leverage and has the right mentality.

I think Vandy is in pretty good shape here.

    • What do you say, as a Yale grad, when recruits say things like 'South Carolina and Clemson are like Ivy League schools'? Do you ever have a temptation to correct them and point out how crappy these schools are?

...and you're over here now... great.

Since when is Clemson a crappy school?

    • He does not look 275 in that pic.

Actually, i probably should have asked what he's weighing these days. I got those numbers from what was listed on his profile but when i saw him last fall in person, he was much closer to 250 than 275.

He may have gained a lot of weight this offseason but when i saw him he looked more like the Wesley Johnson build of a kid that has a slender frame and really good athleticsm.

    • Its right near where Alabama and Auburn are according to US News. From my vantage point, that's crappy. I would never hire a Clemson grad. Even if that's a good education from your vantage point, its nowhere near the Ivy League schools. By contrast, Vandy is #17, and #16 is an Ivy League school.

It's ridiculous that Bama is ranked that high. You need a pulse to be granted admission.

Since you hire people, what do you do for a living?

    • Barton,

When you are grading out an OL prospect, what do you look for? Is it arm legth and footwork and arm strength. Or is it the whole you can't coach size discussion? I am intrigued by how a position with so many variables can be graded.

Great question. I'd like to know as well.

FWIW, I don't think he was referring to the others as Ivy League level academically. The comment played more like "Vandy is Ivy League level academically and plays in the SEC the other schools have strong academics and football as well"

Don't think he was trying to put them all in the same category.

To me it's about frame (not purely size), feet, bend and attitude.

You look for good length but I personally don't really care what they weigh. In fact, I like prospects that are lighter and have the ability to add weight. TEs who move down to OT, light OTs that can fill out. Those types are usually better athletically.

Feet are really important. (quickness, coordination, balance)

Do they bend at the knees or do they bend at the waste?

Are they tough, physical and love to compete? - That is not always easy to evaluate but that's something Wesley Johnson had. Kid competes at everything. So he weighed, 240 pounds as a senior? you can get past that if the kid has some length and athleticism and will compete.

    • Wesley Johnson is a great player. I believe he only plays at 270 now. (He's also All SEC)
